Hutchinson Hospital, located in central Kansas, has become a major medical hub serving central and southwest Kansas. Backed by a progressive medical and dental staff, they continue to add new services and experience growth in well-established services.
Hutchinson Hospital is home to the Chalmers Cancer Treatment Center, which provides services for the care and treatment of patients with cancer. Under the direction of Stephen Braun, MD, Chalmers is equipped with two linear accelerators. Their Clinac 21 EX, allows a radiation beam to configure to the shape of the tumor while rotating around the patient, allowing for a higher dosage of cancer-killing radiation to be directed at the tumor, without harming surrounding healthy tissue.
Chalmers is currently making plans for installation of a TomoTherapy
Hi-Art treatment system. Radiation oncologist can obtain CT images before
every treatment. This system of treatment conforms to the tumor and avoids
critical organs, which leads to improved outcomes, few side effects and a higher
quality of life.
Additionally, Chalmers will be installing a dedicated 24-slice CT, which will
facilitate the planning process for patients. Both the Tomography Unit and
the 24-slice CT unit are being financed from a generous grant from the Hutchinson
Hospital Foundation.
More than 10,000 patients have received treatments at Chalmers since it opened in 1988. Common procedures include: Intensity modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT); 3D conformal radiotherapy; stereotactic radiosurgery; prostate brachytherapy and image guided radiation therapy (IGRT).
Medical oncologists Dr. Fadi Estephan, Dr. Mark Fesen and Dr. Gregory Nanney complete the oncology team.
